who’s that girl?
an introduction series profiling contemporary peculiar women + their brands with a sneak peek on how they curate their lives via conversation and photos.
hello i am: @mrsangelascott
angela scott is an artistan, creative director, founder of the office of angela scott, shoe designer + storyteller.
I. is there an ideal woman for mr. smith, mr. seymour and mr. oliver; if so, who?
a: there is no ideal woman for any of the shoes that i design. i think that if a woman loves the shoes and the shoes make her feel confident: punk rock, beautiful or sexy then it doesn’t matter if she is XXV or LXV, whether she is a business woman or a dancer or a hippie or conservative.
the mystery man: mr. leopold
look: gorgeous
build: hand painted wingtip
species: oxford
other: appearing fall MMXII
quote: “It was auspicious of her to wear her wingtip oxfords as we had miles to walk through the streets of london and mr. leopold would hate to have seen her crawl or beg for a piggy back ride.”
angela the storyteller:
every season [at the office of angela scott] will have mr., mrs., and miss shoes. it’s a bit of a play on words as I name the oxfords “mr.,” the high heels that partner with those oxfords, “mrs.,” and the stand alone boots, booties, or high heels without an oxford partner “miss.”
it’s also a way for me to make light of fashion and have a little fun through storytelling. every shoe has life and what better way to bring life to a shoe than through a story. i base each of the shoes on a man or a woman that i’ve met or that i’ve seen from afar and created a story in my head, or from my own personal experiences.
I. how does your brand bridge tradition and innovation?
a: [my brand is] really about generations colliding. i was inspired by my grandfather who had an old school italian approach to fashion—tradition and quality. it was his generation that grew up working with their hands, learning a trade and making a living, and providing for their family by making something (in my grandfather’s case it was furniture). the office of angela scott, is really a merge of the tradition and craftsmanship qualities that my grandfather instilled in me, along with the quirky, artistic, and slightly punk rock generation of california surfers, snowboarders and musicians that i grew up around and was inspired by. the office of angela scott takes classic silhouettes and bespoke construction details and throws in a little funk and artistic craftsmanship—that’s what allows the brand to be both traditional and innovative at the same time.
I. if you were a combination of a pattern and a color what would you be and why?
a: herringbone black on black on black! ha!
I. artisanship is_______________.
a: passion
I. your collection blurs the lines of gender with pumps and oxfords for women; in a time, where gender roles such as, the traditional u.s. crafter/artisan spheres, the “sewing room” for women and the “workshop” for men, has changed. how has this evolution influenced your brand as a creative focused on artisanship as a whole?
a: i believe in craftsmanship. there is nothing more powerful and beautiful than a product that has been made by hand. it doesn’t matter whether you are a man or a woman, the importance is the love and belief behind the product that is being made. it could be wine, shoes, clothing, pottery, the passion and the pride that goes into something hand crafted is like nothing else.
